Getting a used car into Kenya is decided less by the car than by three checkpoints, and you meet them in a fixed order. If you understand the order, you can plan around it; if you don't, you discover problems after you have already paid.

Checkpoint 1 — the age line, checked before you pay

Kenya measures age from first registration and applies a right-hand-drive requirement. The practical consequence is that a car must still be inside the age window on the day it clears, not the day you bought it, so a slow route can push a unit out of eligibility. Choose the model year with the shipping time in mind, not just the price.

Checkpoint 2 — the documents, before the vessel sails

Kenya's clearing agents work fastest when the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin are consistent with each other and with the declared value. Mismatches at this stage are the most common cause of a slow clearance, so we prepare the export set to match the unit you actually bought.

Checkpoint 3 — valuation at Mombasa

Duty is not assessed on what you paid; it is assessed on a customs value Kenya Revenue Authority derives for that model and year, then excise, VAT and the various levies are layered on. That is why two cars with the same sticker price can clear for very different totals. A clearing agent can give you the current figure for your exact model-year before you commit.

After release
