Zimbabwe is one of the few markets where the model year you pick changes the tax more than the model itself. Buyers who choose purely on sticker price are often surprised at clearance; buyers who do the arithmetic first usually pay less for a car they like more.

How the tax stacks

Zimbabwe layers import duty with a surtax and VAT, and the surtax is sensitive to vehicle age and engine size. The older and the larger the engine, the worse the multiple — which is why a newer, smaller-engine unit can end up cheaper to own than a cheaper-looking older one.

The year effect, in practice

Because the surtax rises with age, the sweet spot is usually the newest model year your budget reaches inside the age window, not the oldest you can still import. Moving one year newer can cut the total more than negotiating the sticker down.
